Fishing and the Fishhook Removal Lesson

carp-love

I was able to enjoy the spring day and went fishing.  The only thing I caught was a stinky ol’ carp.  Not the tasty walleye I was looking for.  But, it did get me thinking.  How many times have I taken fishhooks out of people’s fingers, hands, arms, chests, and faces?  Many, many times!  My favorite method is one I don’t use very often in the ER setting.  It would work great out on the boat or on the bank so here it is:

The Great Fishhook String YANK:

This method works great for medium sized hooks imbedded in places such as a finger or chin.  Basically you loop a strong string around the shank of the hook and put downward pressure on the eye of the hook.  With a firm YANK pull hard with the loop of string and wham! out comes the hook!  Make sure you don’t hit yourself in the eye with the flying hook either…

Below is a diagram of said technique:

I haven’t had much luck yet with the fishing, but I plan to make a quick trip tomorrow and see if I can catch one or two!
